Houston Chronicle 2020 Best Dressed Announcement Party!
I am super excited, honored and humbled to be selected as a 2020 Houston Chronicle Best Dressed honoree. The announcement party is featured in this video, which took place in October at Neiman Marcus. I can't wait for the luncheon scheduled for March 25, 2020 benefiting the March of Dimes, which will have the amazing fashions from the one and only Oscar de la Renta. March of Dimes leads the fight for the health of all moms and babies. During my pregnancy with "D", I became involved with March of Dimes. I was introduced to a program called the Honey Child Program through Wheeler Avenue Baptist Church and taught a Prego PIYOLET class for the participants and we talked about pregnancy and health matters. I was completely unaware of the astounding statistics related to African American women and the disparities in premature birth, death and care. I knew my pregnancy was "high-risk" due to my age, but, I have since found out that not only was my age a factor, but, my race created a 30% higher chance that myself or my baby could suffer from death, an abnormality or I would give birth prematurely. March of Dimes has created the Birth Equity Initiative which is locally lead by Shawntell McWilliams and Leisa Holland Nelson to address this disparity, create awareness and raise the much needed funds to support this organization. According to March of Dimes:
"Achieving birth equity means that all moms and babies have the opportunity to attain good health and that conditions for optimal births are assured for all. Greater Houston Birth Equity Initiative was established to inspire collaboration, partnership and innovation required to improve equity outcomes for moms and babies in Houston.
